BIOGRAPHYPeter K. Steimer received his MSc in 1981 and his PhD in 1991 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. From 1981 until 1990 he worked as R&D engineer at ABB in the field of high power drives and static Var compensation. From 1990 till 1996 he has been the general manager of the R&D department for drives & power electronics. From 1997 until 2007 he served as technology manager for ABB’s business unit for medium voltage drives and power electronics systems leading programs for the new IGCT technology, new multi-level technologies and related Control and PEBB platforms. In 1998/99 he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 2002 he successfully graduated in the program “Mastering technology enterprise” at IMD. From 2008 until 2012 he served as Vice president of Innovation for ABB’s business unit for medium voltage drives and power electronics systems. From 2013 until mid of 2014 he served as Vice president for Innovation for ABB’s new business unit power conversion. Since August 2014 Peter K. Steimer is an ABB Corporate Research Fellow for High Power Electronics Technology and Applications. His research interests are with new high power semiconductors, multi-level topologies, very high power conversion, MV drives, FACTS, HVDC, renewables and storage, transportation and e-mobility. He is the inventor or co-inventor of more than 50 patents and has authored or co-authored more than 100 technical papers. He is an IEEE fellow (2009), an ABB Corporate Executive Engineer (2010) and an ABB Corporate Research Fellow (2014). Since july 2020 I am serving as a Hitachi Energy Research Fellow with a main focus related to power grid innovations and technologies to enable a greener planet.
