About Peter Stratton
My research involves analyzing and understanding the complex neural dynamics that underlie perception, categorization, learning processes, motor control and ultimately high-level thought.Broad principles underlying complex brain function remain elusive and unknown. Progress in neuroscience and artificial general intelligence is being hindered by a lack of new theories that could lead to a unified understanding of neural processing.Mental functions are performed by complex, multiscale patterns of neural activity. However, we don’t understand how individual neurons at the microscale act in unison to generate emergent, dynamic population-level properties, and conversely how macroscale population activity may orchestrate single neurons.Linking across scales and systems is necessary to understand how dynamical patterns of neural activity are directed to ultimately support mental processing. Such understanding could significantly broaden treatment options for mental illnesses, and inspire new efforts to create novel algorithms for neural computation.
