As Director of the Lyell McEwin Emergency Department, I had the pleasure of leading a great team of medical, nursing, clerical and orderly staff whose vision of the ED led to rapid growth in the skill of the team to provide clinical care, improve communication with patients and families and manage an increasingly complex and seriously ill patients.

Following a review of the Modbury Hospital ED, Healthscope and SA Health asked to take on the role of Director of Emergency Department and took the opportunity to work with staff to introduce Clinical Guidelines, implement regular Medical and Nursing Teaching, ALS and Trauma accreditation and begin building a Consultant led ED.

As the first FACEM consultant appointment at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, I made it my goal to seek accreditation with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. This was achieved within 12 months and our first registrars began in 1997. During the 5 years from 1997 and 2001 a total of 10 registrars sat the ACEM Primary Exam and all 10 passed with their first attempt. I had the pleasure of working across a range of hospitals and health units during my training in Emergency Medicine including Adult EDs, Paediatric EDs, Anaesthetics / ICU, Paediatric ICU and took on the role of (acting) ED Director in my final training year.

After my initial Intern Year, I applied and was accepted into Rural GP training and began my second year as a doctor working in a rural setting covering the (busy) local hospital after hours on call and undertook another Rural rotation in my third year. During this period I was also able to complete training in ED, Psychiatry and Obstetrics and special skill posts in Anaesthesia (12 months) and General Medicine / Cardiology (12 months).
