Analyzing the surfaceome of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line and three subsets with specific metastatic preferences via cell surface capture (CSC) and mass spectrometry. The specific surface barcodes of these cell lines in both 2D culture and 3D degradable hydrogel systems will be developed.

Examined the effects of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) size and functional group on the adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Synthesized and characterized gold nanoparticles of two distinct sizes and ligands. Then, these AuNPs were added to MSC cell cultures. Cell growth, morphology, and adipogenic differentiation were examined. Results indicated interesting biological implications of the β-mercaptopropionic acid functional group on the AuNP surface, as it seemed to facilitate adipogenic differentiation.

Examined response of a patterned monolayer of ovarian cancer cells in a microfluidic channel to spatially controlled gradients of specific cytokines.Analyzed data from single-cell RNA-Seq of ovarian and breast cancer cells in order to quantify the transcriptomes of single cells and compare against bulk qPCR expression levels of select oncogenes.

Designed and validated a mathematical model describing the dynamics of bacterial quorum sensing in a controlled microfluidic environment. Fabricated SU-8 master molds via photolithography, the PDMS microfluidic chips via soft lithography, and ran experiments testing mass transfer and bacterial fluorescent responses to signal molecules governing the quorum sensing mechanism.
