My first exposure to medical outreach was as a youth in Saudi Arabia, where my father was employed. There, the oil company medical department provided outreach to indigenous persons to fight endemic Cholera, Glaucoma, and Malaria. Then as a world traveler, I saw people who were suffering: blind beggars on the streets on New Delhi, India; Bangladeshi typhoon victims; and refugees of war in Palestine.My medical journey started as a volunteer at Harbor City Volunteer Ambulance Squad. Beginning as a dispatcher assistant, dispatcher, first responder, and EMT. Emergency Medical Services were in a growth spurt. This was my first insight into the workings of a health delivery system. Later, as a paid Paramedic of HCVAS, I strived to find the best and safest means to accomplish a task. Many times this came as an immediate need arose. Continuous assessment and subsequent treatment is always needed for critical patients. The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center is the premier referral hospital in the Middle East. Their mandate is to treat and research cures for cancers, congenital defects, and chronic diseases. My experiences through our outreach program to The Saudi Red Crescent Ambulance, I saw firsthand how the average person lived and what instruments of war can inflict on humans.Coupled with duties as Air evacuation/ground response Paramedic, our task as Protocol Paramedics was to accompany the then King of Saudi Arabia and visiting dignitaries. Preplanning was essential although flexibility was always necessary.As a Paramedic, I assisted in setup an Emergency Department in a new hospital. A suggestion to use a system implemented in Saudi Arabia whereby a doctor is placed in Triage to examine patients was suggested to cut down on wait times and improve efficiency.
