I trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in their London office,working on multinational audits before transferring to their Liverpool office taxation department, later joining Ernst & Young becoming a senior tax manager qualifiying as an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.I went back to PwC for 2 years before joining Bresnan Walsh as an equity partner in December 1991. Having built the firm up from six to 24 staff working in various departments, I was asked to form & lead BWMacfarlane LLP merging with Macfarlane + Co, itself a long established & substantial accountancy firm to form BWM as one of the leading Liverpool City Centre firms.My voluntary activities included being Chair of the Liverpool Younger Members Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales for five years and was later Treasurer of the Institute’s Liverpool Society. I chaired the Business Planning Committee of a large housing association as well as sitting on its main board for 8 years, later becoming a governor of an independent school for 3 years, and then trustee of Open Awards before stepping down late 2022. Reflecting my increased interest in charities, I was a member of the Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales’ Charity and Voluntary Sector Special Interest Group for 5 years. Having navigated BWM through Covid, supporting our clients, I attracted investment into BWM as part of a much larger accountancy group allowing for further expansion whilst allowing me to step back and now finally retired.
