During my PhD I am actively researching the process of anaerobic methane oxidation in innovative bioelectrochemical systems. I utilize environmental samples to attempt enrichment/isolation of novel anaerobic methanotrophs while establishing methane dependent currents. I analyse (enriched) microbial community by means of sequencing (Ilumina and Nanopore) and subsequent metagenome analysis.Additionally, I am investigating the role of alcohol dehydrogenases and the usage of various alcohols as alternative substrates for methanogenesis by means of heterologues protein expression, FPLC protein purification and spectrophotometric activity assays.Furthermore, as an educational PhD candidate I am responsible for the coordination of practical lab classes in the Biology Bachelor program as well as the coordination of a Introductory course in the Microbiology Master specialization.

During my internship at Deltares I worked on the microbial degradation of a variety of commodity plastics in Dutch natural environments.

During this research internship I was working in the microbial cell biology and biochemistry group led by Dr. Laura van Niftrik. Together with my daily supervisor Dr. Wouter Versantvoort I have investigated the missing link in the anammox metabolism. During this period I purified the responsible enzymes for the oxidation of hydrazine and production of dinitrogen gas from Kuenenia stuttgartiensis. To investigate the electron acceptor potential of different anammox proteins and cell fractions I used the following methods: fast protein liquid chromatography, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, genomic screening (CLC), gel-electrophoresis and enzymatic activity assays. This led to the purification of the potential electron acceptor KsTH.

Assisting and teaching the lab courses of "Plant Evolution and Adaptation" and "Evolution and Adaptation of Animals"

During this research internship at the department of ecological microbiology I investigated the cell division of planctomycetes under supervision of dr. Stijn Peeters and prof. dr. Laura van Niftrik. I became familiar with the culturing of diverse planctomycetes, (time-lapse) fluorescent microscopy, high resolution clear native electrophoresis and immunoprecipitation of monoclonal antibodies from cell supernatants.

Being responsible for the planning of activities of the study association BeeVee (Biology association at Radboud University) as well as communication line between the board and chairmen of the committees. As a board member I had weekly meetings about the functioning of the association and was partly responsible for developing new policy and writing of the semi-annually reports. During this year I obtained experience with planning, taking minutes of meetings, communication and coordination.
