About Peter Thornton Mbe

A maritime dispute resolution lawyer, practising primarily on the wet side providing advice on regulations, casualty management and litigation. Before becoming a lawyer, I was a merchant navy deck officer and retired as a Large Yacht Captain after 22 years at sea in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and yachting industry. My 15 years in the RFA was in various types of UK Government cargo ships including tankers, dry cargo, repair ships and RoRo. I served in the South Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Persian/Arabian Gulf and Far East. I am proud to have been the Flag Lieutenant to the First Sea Lord & Admiralty Board from 2002 to 2003 and to have received the Captain Farmer prize as the top Royal Navy specialist navigator in 2007. After serving as navigator and operations officer in RFA SIR BEDIVERE and RFA LYME BAY on operations in the Gulf, I went on to become the RFA staff navigator to FOST, training and assessing RFA and RN ships at sea in ECDIS navigation and bridge team management in a variety of operational scenarios. As a professional yachtsman, I had many adventures in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans but positions of particular note are as Chief Officer of "MY MOSAIQUE", a busy 50m charter yacht in the Med; Chief Officer and then Captain of the largest sloop in the world, the 78m "SY M5" in the Atlantic and Pacific; Captain of the "GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland" yacht for the 2015-2016 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race; and Relief Captain of SY SEA EAGLE, a 43m performance cruiser in the Atlantic and Pacific. Between 2010 and 2013 alongside my yacht jobs, I was also one of the three founding directors of the digital navigation company "ECDIS Ltd" and authored "The ECDIS Manual" first published by Witherby-Seamanship in 2012.
