About Peter Vamplew
I have been employed as an academic in the area of computing since completing my Honours degree at Flinders University in 1991, firstly at the University of Tasmania then at the University of Ballarat. In January 2014, the University of Ballarat merged with the Gippsland campus of Monash University to form Federation University.During my career I have taught in a wide range of topics including introductory programming in a variety of languages, artificial intelligence, graphics, games programming, software engineering and networking. Across all units I have been rated by students and peers as an excellent teacher.I have also carried out research in the artificial intelligence area, resulting in more than 100 peer-reviewed academic publications (full details are available through my Google Scholar profile at http://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=Q4oV_VoAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao). My early work was on the use of supervised neural networks for sign-language recognition (for which I received my PhD in 1996). More recently I have specialised in reinforcement learning techniques. In particular over the last few years I have focused on extending reinforcement learning methods to problems with multiple objectives. In 2021 I was awarded the Federation University Vice Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence.I have also supervised a number of research students in the fields of machine learning, evolutionary computing and virtual reality.
