Now retired from paid employment, I am now pursuing my life-long interests in ecology, natural history and nature conservation. I am active, on a voluntary basis, in nature conservation projects in the UK and Europe.My early career was in the biotechnology industry before joining the UK Civil Service, initially to work on science policy, including representing UK in negotiations on EU Biotechnology programmes. Subsequently I broadened my experience to include inward investment, government finance, investment appraisal and energy policy. The latter included responsibility for the Government's £25 billion British Coal pension liabilities. I worked with Government Ministers, MPs and EU Officials on the formulation and delivery of policy, before becoming a full time CEO of a public sector pension fund. In parallel to my paid employment, I developed my knowledge and experience of ecology and nature conservation through volunteer work and undertaking a number of part-time university qualifications. I have done extensive practical conservation and biological survey work, and served as a Trustee for a major regional nature conservation charity, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. I am currently involved in biological survey activities in the UK, and also in Project Proteus, which aims to conserve the "Olm" cave Salamander and its underground cave pool habitat in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The latter includes some field-work in Bosnia.
