  • Reefolution Foundation
    Coral Restoration, Management
    Reefolution Foundation Apr 2019 - Aug 2019
    Kenia
Most of my time at REEFolution in Kenya was not spend for my master thesis, but with helping the organization on every aspect needed. This was not at the expense of my master thesis. I helped the organisation with coral restoration, team supervision, fundraising and promotion. After showing my dedication and capabilities I was asked to help set-up an education program for teenagers from the United Kingdom. I was also asked to lead this education program once the teenagers arrived. Every five days a new group of 30 teenagers would arrive (and leave). I really enjoyed leading this program and it was a delight to see how much the teenagers enjoyed the interactive method of education. Which consisted of presentations in the early morning, field trips in the late morning (mangrove walks, snorkelling excursions, beach clean-ups) and hands-on education in the afternoon. This included making artificial reefs and coral tree nurseries, plastic monsters and posters. My work was greatly appreciated and I managed to finish my master thesis in time with an excellent grade. After my graduation I was supposed to help REEFolution with starting a new coral restoration project at a resort. Which included two phases. Phase one consisted of creating a feasibility report. This report consisted of the biotic aspects of the status of nearby coral reefs and the fish communities, abiotic aspects, logistics, socio-economic aspects, stakeholder analysis and arranging permits. The second phase would come after the first successful try-outs of coral tree nurseries and consists of upscaling the project with more nurseries and artificial reefs. It would also include setting-up an education centre and initiate the fundraising possibilities. Unfortunately, due to the corona-lockdown it is unsure whether this project can go on.
  • Sint Eustatius National Parks (Stenapa)
    Marine Ranger Internship
Sint Eustatius National Parks (Stenapa) Aug 2017 - Nov 2017
    Sint Eustatius
As a marine ranger for STENAPA at Sint Eustatius (Caribbean) I helped with different kinds of research, I helped with the maintenance of facilities underwater and I helped with a coral restoration project. My supervisor quickly noticed that I was capable of supervising the team and more often I was tasked with this supervision, so my supervisor could attend other duties. Within a month two category five hurricanes swept over the island, severely crippling the island and destroying most of Staghon/Acropora cervicornis colonies, which destroyed the feasibility of my personal research. Within a week I drafted a new research. In this research I monitored the damage done to two species of coral (Staghorn and Elkhorn/Acropora palmata) done by two category five hurricanes. With a time-lapse research I monitored the recovery or the decay of the coral colonies. This gave me a lot of insights in coral bleaching, coral competition with macro algae and abiotic aspects involving the recovery of the coral colonies.
  • Wildlife In Need Rescue Center
    Volunteer
Wildlife In Need Rescue Center Feb 2016 - Mar 2016
    Filippijnen
Within a week I was asked to lead a research to find a good location to release rescued long-tailed macaques. Based on my report the government approved the release. I was also tasked with repairing, enriching and improving the facilities for the animals. Like refurnishing the long-tailed macaque, civet cat, giant fruit bat and raptor cages and adding a lot of enrichment. Which diminished the fighting and stress among the animals. I also aided in education and fundraising events.
