After graduation as a doctor, I did general medical and surgical posts for three years, then trained in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1978. I obtained my higher qualifications of Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in 1983 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS London) in 1982. I moved to a research post in the University of Bristol Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1983 and completed research on in-vitro fertilisation and endometriosis. I was awarded the higher degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the University of Bristol in 1987.I then completed my general training accreditation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and started additional Sub-specialist training in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery. I was the first Gynaecologist in the UK to obtain this additional training, which involved a three-year training programme.In 1989, I was appointed as a Consultant Senior Lecturer at St Michaels Hospital Bristol and was given the additional responsibility of Deputy Director of the University of Bristol IVF programme in 1994. I was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) in 1996.In 1999, I moved across Bristol to take over the responsibility for the NHS Fertility service at Southmead Hospital. In 2004, we submitted a successful Business Plan to amalgamate the specialist Fertility Services in Bristol in a new purpose-built unit. I was appointed as Clinical Lead for Fertility Services and the new unit, the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM), opened in January 2008. It has been very successful, providing a comprehensive range of fertility services for NHS and self-funding patients. The assisted conception treatment results have been in the top ten for the UK for the past 5 years.I retired from the NHS in November 2012 but maintain an active private practice and my strong links with BCRM.
