I am a Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies, with considerable experience and expertise lecturing in Hispanic and Latin American history, politics, literature, film and culture. I am an expert on the history of Latin American football, particularly with relation to nation-building. My most specialised area is on Colombian football and nation-building, which was the subject of my PhD. I have published a number of academic and journalistic articles on this topic, as well as appeared on various podcasts and radio shows as an expert.For 14 years I taught languages (primarily Spanish, but also French and Portuguese) in two private secondary schools and was Head in Spanish in both. Having gained a 1st at Southampton University in Iberian and Latin American Studies and then completed my PGCE at Bristol University I was appointed at Gresham's School who had recently introduced Spanish. 12 years later, Spanish was a thriving department with many pupils going on to study at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. I also coached a variety of sports, and was Master in Charge of Cricket for 5 years, as well as coaching rugby, hockey, football and badminton. On the pastoral side I was the House Tutor for a boarding house for 10 years and acted as Housemaster on several occasions due to illness of the incumbent master. I was then appointed as Head of Spanish at Malvern College. My experience and knowledge of IT software and web-based technologies helped the department become one of the leaders in fostering independent learning an the VLE that we constructed became the model for other departments. In this time I also taught native Spanish speakers. I was heavily involved again in extra curricular activities at Malvern, coaching cricket and rugby and being a house tutor in a boarding house.Over my 14 years I gained experience teaching a variety of exam boards, and I taught throughout the whole school and have great knowledge of GCSE, A level and IB syllabi. This led me to become the lead author for the Pearson Education IB Spanish website, based on my idea. I have also authored several Spanish A level resources for ZigZag and have given web tool training at national events, as well as via an international webinar.Having studied an MA at the University of Sheffield I then studied a PhD at the same university, researching how football was used during the presidency of Juan Manuel Santos for nation building. During this time I taught a number of modules and wrote various articles for Latin News, Football Paradise and Razón Pública.
