I've been a practising photo-journalist in the Australian boating world since 1972 when I purchased a boating magazine called 'Practical Family Boating', changed its name to "Australian Boating" - and started a 40+ year career in boating. Married Mary in 1965, and had four children very close together as she and I both came from WW2 families where the kids were always 4-5 years apart. Not good, so we took the opposite path, and never regretted it for a moment. The 'kids' were our friends, mates, fishing companions, and family. They grew up to become another photo journalist (Jeff) and accountant (Tracey) scientist (Dr) Jody and Advert Exec (Jamie) and have nine more kids between 'em. For a couple of teenagers who married in the 1960's it's been a wonderful outcome, and for that, Mary must take the credit as a devoted full time Mum. Since the 1970s, the boating industry has had more downs than ups, and the recessions we've endured, culminating in the GFC in 2008, have taken a terrible toll financially, as the 'industry' today is but a shadow of what it used to be in (say) the 1980's. The changes in the publishing world have been 'challenging' too, as we moved from letterpress type, to digital, and witnessed first hand the collapse of printed magazines in the failed newsagency system. But it's what we do, and we have considerable knowledge and experience to share with today's marine management - and thankfully, thousands of readers of our 'on line' magazines and books who make the whole thing worth doing.
