Qponics is an agri-business company in the food and beverage sector focused on the sustainable organic production of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 oils from Australian algae. The Company has formed an array of strategic alliances to access (a) fresh water tolerant strains of omega-3 producing algae, (b) an organic aquaculture source of nutrients to fertilise the growth of algae, (c) photo-bioreactor technology to efficiently grow the algae, (d) oil extraction technology, and (e) filling, packaging and distribution of Qponics’ products in the Asia/Pacific region. The algal omega-3 oil industry is projected in 2014 to become 18.9% of the global US$2.5 billion EPA/DHA omega-3 market with an annual growth rate of 15.4%. In the Asia/Pacific algal omega-3 oil represents 37.5% of the US$530 million EPA/DHA omega-3 oil industry in that region, which reflects the large vegetarian populations especially in India and China. Thus we hold the view that the Asia/Pacific will continue to create high demand for quality algal omega-3 oil.Omega-3 oils, specifically fatty acids known as EPA and DHA, are not efficiently synthesised by the body and many neurological, cardiovascular and degenerative diseases may arise from a diet low in these essential fats. Plant-based omega-3 oils, often the only choice for vegetarians, lack DHA and EPA and therefore offer only limited medical benefits.
