About Peter Whiteis

I am a results oriented embedded systems engineer with 24 years of experience developing applications for Optical waveguide products, Motion Control systems, and a variety of Astronomical Instrumentation and Control efforts. I primarily utilize C/C++ and VHDL for core applications development work. I employ higher level scripting languages such as Python, and Matlab for rapid prototype / proof of concept development and data analysis. I am comfortable working with hardware development groups on collaborative efforts involving specification of system design requirements and co-development efforts ranging from early prototypes to re-engineering of mature systems. I am also proficient with use of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, in-circuit emulators, debuggers and network analyzers.I have excellent interpersonal skills and work well as a member of a team as well as in an “individual contributor” role. Additionally, I have managed small project teams, developed project plans and delivered results within timeline and budget.

Listed skills include Embedded Systems, Embedded Software, C, Vhdl, and 11 others.

Senior Software Engineer

Charlottesville, Virginia Area

I develop software for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope, primarily extending the capabilities of a digital signal processing hard/software component known as "the Correlator".

Sr Firmware Engineer

Radford, Va

* Senior Firmware developer responsible for new feature development for intelligent motor drive product lines. Responsible for design and implementation of:* RT communication stacks (Sercos, EtherCAT, CAN, Modbus)* Position, velocity and torque loop control* Trajectory generation* Functional safety features* Position encoder interfacesFirmware was written entirely in C++ for hard real time execution on Blackfin and Zynq architectures. Daily work involved a close collaboration with an international group of firmware and FPGA developers. Prioritized and coordinated development efforts through morning Scrum meetings. Software development followed rigorous process consisting of extensive unit, simulation and system testing, as well as regular team inspection of code.

Dec 2013 - Apr 2016

Engineer/Ao Group

Waimea, Hawaii

* Responsible for development of Secondary mirror control system. This effort involved replacement of legacy supervisory control system and motion control hardware with modern equivalents. Specific tasks:* Porting/rewriting SUN EPICS based supervisory control software to run under Linux 64 bit platform. Additional work involved interfacing control system to replacement hardware interfaces, notably a new motion controller.* Replacement of Compumotor motion controllers with Delta Tau turbo PMAC motion controllers. Implemented kinematic transforms for PMAC controller to perform coordinated motion of tripod mirror platform.* Ported legacy ‘C’ language RPC instrument communication application from 32 bit Solaris/SUN to Linux 64 bit architecture. Worked with partner observatories in ultimate deployment of application on Keck Cosmic Web Imager instrument.

Jan 2013 - Dec 2013

Embedded Systems Engineer

Green Bank, Wv

Principal designer/developer and team leader for the Monitor Interafce Board (MIB) embedded software effort for the EVLA project ( http://science.nrao.edu/evla/index.shtml ). Software consisted of an embedded SCADA application common to all EVLA antenna hardware, as well as "personality software" specific to each hardware module (re: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/evla/techdocs/computer/workdocs/MIB_FWSW_V110.pdf ). External command/monitor interface utilized XML formatted messages over TCP/UDP (re: http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/evla/techdocs/computer/workdocs/MIB_SP_ICD_V120rev3.pdf ). Developed MIB applications that realized Local Oscillators, RF/IF Down-converters, Power Digitizers, Atmospheric Phase Interferometer, Correlator, and Motor Drive interfaces.Responsible for design and development of motor controller interface firmware for a digital servo replacement effort. This firmware provided a EtherCAT network interface directly to 24 motor drive units. The firmware, written in C/C++ and VHDL implements: 1) EtherCAT link handling 2) A/D and D/A signal conversions 3) velocity encoding algorithms (Periodometer and Frequency) and 4) fault handling.Responsible for developing extensions to a large C++ application framework ( re: http://www.gb.nrao.edu/GBT/MC/doc/GBTsoft.html ) used for control of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Extensions mainly consisted of interfaces to new instrumentation being deployed to the GBT.
