Applied mineralogy in base metals with associated PGM's and mineralogy of gold deposits. Application of automated mineralogy methods using TESCAN-TIMA, QEMSCAN, MLA, EPMA, XRD and optical microscopy / image analysis to provide mineral data to metallurgists, plant operations and exploration geologists for ore characterization. Improvements in grades and recoveries can result from the application of this data. Data is also used to refine and better target metallurgical test work and can shorten the time required for test programs. Building and managing a core group of mineralogy specialists, identifying and implementing the appropriate mineral measurement technologies is a key goal in carrying out this work.Specialties: Mineralogy of base and precious metal deposits with a view to metallurgical implications for plant operation, metallurgical test work, ore characterization and support of advanced exploration projects.

Manager, MineralogyAutec Mar 2010 - PresentVancouver, British Columbia, CanadaDeveloped a Mineralogy Lab capability for Barrick Gold Corp. to provide operations support and support metallurgical test work at Barrick Technology Centre. Implemented use of XRD (Bruker D8 Focus), applied MLA measurements for mineral characterization initially and added two TESCAN-TIMA systems in 2012. MLA replaced by a third TIMA system in 2018 equipped with cathode luminescence and Oxford Instruments combined EDX-WDX spectrometers for major and trace element mineral analysis. Support is supplied for Barrick global operations and exploration as well as external clients with a focus on gold deposit mineralogy and the mineralogy of gold from flotation concentrates and tails, hydrometallurgy and leach products and calcines from pyrometallurgy. Environment samples related to gold mine operations are also characterized using mineralogy. XRF element intensity distribution maps are provided for exploration clients on cut drill core / slabs to characterize element distributions with macro-scale features (veins, shears, alteration) using a Bruker M4 Tornado XRF analyzer. -
Principal GeoscientistXstrata Process Support Xps Aug 2006 - Feb 2010Falconbridge, Ontario, CanadaManaged the Mineralogy Laboratory to provide Xstrata Operations support for Ni, Cu and PGM processing. Involved exploration geologists on global projects, undergound mine operations (backfill mineralogy), concentrator operations (Strathcona, Kidd Creek, Raglan, Collahuasi, Antamina), smelter operations (Falconbridge), Health and Safety (mine site buildings - asbestos mineralogy). Lab maintained and operated 2 QEMSCAN SEM's, Bruker D8 XRD, CAMECA SX-100 EPMA, TESCAN Vega SEM with Oxford quantitative EDX (INCA, AZTEC).
