Vaka is a purpose-built social enterprise based in Australia to deliver on-going medical professional career development to health workers in resource poor communities. VAKA is an African word widely understood across Africa to mean "build". This action-based word reflects our values and ethos to building better health care in Africa.Vaka was registered in 2021 to improve holistic health outcomes in fragile countries. The delivery of the mobile health education is on a purpose-built software platform that works with variable broadband and all types of mobile devices. It’s critical that technology can work in all sorts of conditions in remote and regional Africa where access to broadband is variable, and people’s access to mobile technology is limited. The medical protocols in the professional career activities are developed with health practitioners on the ground who understand how limited resources available to African health workers affects health care. Why is this important? A critical challenge to health services in Africa is the insufficient supply and training of health workers. It is estimated that by 2030, sub-Saharan Africa alone will need 18 million health workers. Delivering health education on this platform has the potential to fast track vastly improved holistic outcomes for health in Africa in a cost-efficient and effective way. We have already demonstrated results under the most difficult conditions.VAKA has an initial focus on Zimbabwe, where it has provided accredited professional development course for nurses in partnership with the Zimbabwean Nurses Council. The application has already been successfully rolled out to health care workers in Zimbabwe during COVID. More than 27,000 nurses (80+ % of the nursing group) have completed at least 3 – 4 modules translating to more than 108,000 continuing professional activities.
