When I left school aged sixteen to become a writer, my father said I was mad. He sent me to a psychiatrist who agreed I was mad. They suggested I take a sensible job in a bank. All my life I've remained a writer. The bank would've fired me years ago.I started with radio scripts and short stories. When television began there seemed few opportunities for Australians, so my wife and I went to England with our two young children. We had to succeed because we had no return fare. For 20 years in London, I wrote TV plays and series, then twelve feature films, after that stage plays. In 1972 my play ”Birds on the Wing” was the most produced and top grossing play in Western Europe.In 1976 we came back to Australia. Since then I've written twenty mini-series, a few films and twelve novels. Even my Dad eventually said, "Lucky you didn't take that job in the bank.” Peter
