Conducting seasonal surveys for the USFS and Oregon Department of Forestry. Broadcast acoustical surveys target Northern Goshawks, and other raptors and woodpeckers are recorded during transects.
Field Technician
Hollings Scholarship
Through my Hollings Scholarship with NOAA I am working on a project with colleagues about the ecological impacts of a salmon recolonization event on an aquatic ecosystem. This initially entailed a 10 week summer internship in which I worked 40 hours a week with responsibilities including utilizing microscopy to analyze drift samples, reviewing relevant literature, managing and contributing to large databases, analyzing data in R, and preparing presentations for conferences. I thoroughly learned sampling methods and protocol for biofilm, macro-invertebrates, and salmonids, though I was unable to participate directly due to Covid.I presented initial findings at an office-wide conference with the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center as well as at the Society for Freshwater Science and Western Division of the American Fisheries Society. Our analysis has continued following the end of the initial internship with the incorporation of additional factors and datasets with further analysis in R, and the preparation of a report to submit for publication.
Undergraduate Intern
Internship with the Shark Research and Conservation Program at the University of Miami, helping with fieldwork and assistance in the lab, as well as media production and management. Set lines and assisted with collecting measurements and various samples from sharks in South Florida. All fieldwork was preformed from a boat and tags including ID and PIT tags for mark-recapture surveys, as well as acoustic and satellite tags were used. Work was done with endangered species and IACUC protocol was strictly adhered to.Was heavily involved with outreach and communications as volunteers and student groups participated on every trip. I effectively communicated shark science and conservation, as well as directed them in their roles as citizen scientists. Further I often attended tabling events at festivals and events in which I communicated the lab’s research and shark conservation with the public.I additionally took on responsibilities as a media intern in addition to a research intern, in which I photographed trips, edited photos, wrote research blog posts, and managed social media. My research blogs were twice chosen as the best blog post of the semester.
Field Crew Member
Worked 10 weeks in Bryce Canyon National Park with the vegetation management team there in a small crew. We worked on and completed projects relating to managing the vegetation in the park including using herbicide to remove invasive plants, using hand tools to remove undesirable plants from endangered species habitat, using chainsaws to reduce ladder fuels in forests, constructing various types of fencing to protect restoration areas, constructing and placing log barriers along roads to protect adjacent vegetation from vehicles, renaturalizing social trails, and installing signs.
Community Assistant
Assisted with the University of Miami Summer Scholars Program during which I helped students with their marine science coursework, planned activities, and oversaw students in dorms and on field trips.
Student
I assisted a PhD student on his project which determined the effectiveness of oyster reef restoration on promoting biodiversity in brackish river ecosystems near the Chesapeake Bay. I reviewed relevant literature, assisted in data analysis, assisted in collecting data in the field with gill nets and a variety of fish and crab traps, collected environmental data, wrote a report, and created and gave a presentation. This was done through the Virginia Governor’s School Summer Mentorship Program. I was one of six marine science students selected from the state.
