I am Professor of Computer Science at Jacobs University Bremen and CEO & founder of rasdaman GmbH, Bremen.My main societal contributions are * pioneering Array Databases (data models and query languages, storage and query optimization, architectures, applications such as in the earth, space, and life sciences) * advancing standardization of spatio-temporal geo services (OGC, INSPIRE, ISO) and Array SQL (ISO)My career is characterized by working close to the borderline between scientific innovation and industrial application - sometimes on this, sometimes on that side of the border, or on both. I like to combine flexible, innovative inspiration with solid craftsmanship.During my PhD time at Technical University Darmstadt I was principal architect of the APRIL object-oriented database system which subsequently was used for CAD and graphics applications.A spinoff topic, at FORWISS / Technical University Munich, emerged into what now is my core topic: flexible, efficient services on large, multi-dimensional raster data sets. I architected rasdaman ("raster data manager"), the world's first Array Database System which is fully implemented and in operational use. The underlying concepts have been patented in Europe, USA, and Canada. Doing applications in earth and life sciences brought me into geo service standardization. In OGC I am leading several working groups, and I am editor of OGC's Big Data standards suite, WCS, and the OGC Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) datacube query language. In ISO, I have initiated Array SQL now being co-editor of the specification.
