Although Peter Chiarella is relatively new to the winemaking industry, he has proven himself a capable and competent entrepreneur in the almost twenty years he has grown grapes on the Don Raffaele Estate in Napa Valley, California. Mr. Chiarella has gone to great lengths to understand not only the winemaking business, but also its deep history. For this Italian-American, carrying on a tradition prevalent in his family’s home region of Calabria allows him to connect his roots with the present. If things continue the way they have for Peter Chiarella, these roots will likely extend far into the future as the younger generation of the family eventually takes over. Peter Chiarella was not born into the wine business. Originally educated in New York City at St. John's University, Peter was an industrious student who made the Dean’s List and was a member of Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society. Studying Business, Peter graduated with his Bachelor of Business Administration degree and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. Later, Mr. Chiarella translated the skills he learned during this phase of his career into a successful stint as the Chief Financial Officer of a Fortune 500 Company. After several years of running that operation’s finances, Peter recognized an opportunity to realize his lifelong dream of being a winemaker. Today, Crane Family Vineyards is one of the Napa Valley’s most popular best kept secret. After decades spent in boardrooms and eating power lunches, Mr. Chiarella is today very content to walk among the grapevines on the Don Raffaele estate, named after his late father. The unique terroir gives the wines produced from the grapes an intense flavor and aroma, and this, combined with excellent wine making technique results in artisan wine of the highest quality.
