Not my usual job description but it was a very unusual situation....Here's what I did in my time there.I was told I would be working with the core devops team to productize their devops services. Everything from creating tech specs, sales documentation, tiered services, pricing, and support. I would be give a title of Senior Product Manager.Now when it came time to sign they couldn't open a new position for the contract (it was already awarded) I was to be "working on" but doing the above work 99% of the time. So they said for me to accept a DevOps Engineer role and told me I would quickly be transitioned into the senior product manager position. If you have heard enough....That never happened so I left at the end of my contract. Want to know what I did and why it wasn't a waste of time....I have been a developer but not been hands on for several years. I learned so much in the 5 months I was there it was like I got paid to goto school. Not having written code in years I had to do a lot of homework but I learned Chef, puppet, python, a little rest, Ruby/Groovy and many other open source and cots tools like Docker, VSphere, Nexus, Nessus, In my last month I built out 5 servers of a 20 server system. I cant go into detail but here is a high level overview. It was a DOD project. I automated the process of creating VMWare/vSphere images and Docker containers for running network compliance and security tests like openscap, Nessus etc. I had to build these images for an environment with no outside networking so I had to build out local repositories and deliver them with the only tool that had Internet, Nexus. I am not a great developer and I could have really help AgileX in so many other ways. They just didnt seem to be able to get me into the role they promised. However I would do it again if I had the chance because the chance to be hands on doesnt some that often at my level and I learned so much that has paved the way for other great jobs.

Responsible for creating and defining feature set for a Web Application to manage Cloud resources. End to end product integrated with Cloud service providers, manages instances, billing, and reporting. Defined and mocked up Dashboards for Login, landing page, Administration, Reporting (financial / utilization / usage for CSPs and Cloud Compute instances). Utilizing agile development practices and open source tools (Jira, Confluence, Jenkins) and scripting tools (Python, JavaScript) to develop backend data gathering and reporting tools. Overseeing QA Testing: test plan development and execution, defect and fix rate tracking. Automated test cases developed using Selenium modified code to handle UI and content changes.

Integrating BMC's Business Services Applications into Public Broadcasting Services Next Generation, Non-Real Time, content distribution systems.

Designed and delivered a new Source Code Management process. Use of IBM's Rational Suite was mandated by executive management. My process had to account for the widely varying development processes and tools used by the numerous contracted develop teams yet tie everything back into Rational Products like ClearCase. I also had to create a process for support the increasing use of open source.My process goal was to create an SCM system where developers could build their projects but all the resources: environment definition, build scripts, source code, and build output had to be stored under the control of Configuration Management. I broke the plan down into phases and within each phase teams could make incremental changes that would not impact their schedules but would keep them moving towards complete implementation.Goals:- Automatically tie random development tools (Maven, Ant, Eclipse, CruiseControl) into ClearCase ClearQuest, and BuildForge. - Ensure USPTO CM control over all assets for a given project- Generate manifests for all projects to ensure they can be rebuilt - Provide Test Teams with auto grenerated release notes, build diffs etc.- Provide Operations/Production with complete install instructions to reduce the need for developer involvement in the install process and reduce backout rate.
