About Peter Coyl

Peter Coyl is the Library Director & Chief Executive Officer of the Sacramento Public Library, the 4th largest library system in California and the 19th largest in the United States. Previously he was Director of the Montclair Public Library, Central Library Manager at the Dallas Public Library, and as a school librarian at an International School.He served as the President (2022-23) of the Freedom to Read Foundation , a non-profit legal and educational organization affiliated with the American Library Association dedicated to protecting and defending each person's First Amendment right to read, He is also a member of the American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee, and served on ALA Council.He previously served as Chair of the Stonewall Book Awards Committee and as Chair of ALA’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (now the Rainbow Round Table), and as a member of the Public Library Association’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. In 2016 he was honored as one of Drexel University’s 40 Under 40. Coyl earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and Public Policy from Oakland University and his Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Drexel University.
