I'd always admired the way some of my colleagues and friends could approach problems logically, almost in a mathematical way. While I had the ability to solve problems, I would often struggle to justify my solution to these people. I was making decisions based on 'gut feel' which was often wrong as many times as it was right. Without a structured, logical process to consider all the elements, my gut feeling were no better than a best guess.After graduating from University, I attended a critical thinking and problem-solving course that changed the way I think - Black Belt in Thinking. I learned a framework which I could use to organise my thinking and gain clarity. When a problem or situation came up at work, I was able to think quite clearly through the cause-and-effect to understand why it had occurred and what biases or drivers were at play. I could finally develop solutions to not just temporarily solve problems but get rid of them once and for all.Naturally, when the opportunity came up to become a Black Belt in Thinking instructor myself, I took it. Now, even after nearly a decade of teaching others how to use these critical thinking tools, I am still endlessly fascinated by the innovative ways people think and learn.
