  • North Melbourne Football Club
Director Of Sales, Marketing & Communications
North Melbourne Football Club Jun 2002 - Jun 2007
    North Melbourne, Victoria, Au
I was recruited to North Melbourne Football Club by then Chairman, Dr Allen Aylett and CEO, Geoff Walsh to work closely with the CEO to build the Club's commercial areas across corporate and retail segments. We built a commercial team which was dedicated, motivated and produced some amazing results by developing and implementing a comprehensive and integrated business plan. Some notable achievements in this role were building and managing a vibrant relationship with Mazda as well as attracting several other national and multi-national sponsors, growing our supporter and membership base from high teens to mid twenties, further developing the iconic Grand Final Breakfast into a major event with over 3,300 attendees and working closely with the AFL in developing emerging football markets through strategic partnerships with Canberra & Gold Coast.During my time there was a growth in corporate revenues through hospitality and sponsorship and also a sustained growth in Membership and Merchandise.A re-branding and re-positioning strategy was also developed which was aligned with the business strategy.During this time we also created a corporate hospitality arm to the business, Red Corporate Entertainment which focused on providing non-football corporate hospitality solutions to the corporate market. One of the largest ever AFL Club events was also developed in 2006 to celebrate the proud and rich history of North Melbourne, The North Story. Over 3,500 people attended the Royal Exhibition Buildings for this special historic event where Glenn Archer was awarded 'The Shinboner of the Century'.Most importantly, over my five years the Club achieved significant revenue growth with the key outcome being the development of a strong and vibrant commercial arm to the business. After 5 years in this role and during the very public 'Gold Coast' relocation debate (a project I worked on with the Board, CEO and AFL) I left this position for my current role at Etihad Stadium.
  • Hawthorn Football Club
Director Of Sales And Corporate Marketing
Hawthorn Football Club Aug 1999 - Jun 2002
    Mulgrave, Vic, Au
Having been recruited by then President, Ian Dicker and CEO, Michael Brown, my brief was to grow the corporate revenue of the Club. We built a corporate sales team which was regarded as the most aggressive and high achieving in the AFL which generated significant sponsorship and corporate hospitality revenue through both Hawthorn Football Club and the non-football hospitality arm Becker Corporate Entertainment. We were highly acclaimed and reputed in the industry. The large increase in corporate revenue during this time which coincided with the Club's move from Waverley to the MCG was well noted by the Club's Board and CEO.We had some amazing successes along the way and we had strong strategic direction by the Club Board, presided by Ian Dicker and CEO Michael Brown. Some notable sponsors which we worked with were, Samsung, AAPT, Puma, Wizard Home Loans and Crazy John's.It was from this role I was approached by North Melbourne FC to take on the role of Director of Marketing to help build their marketing and commercial area. Whilst it was with reluctance that I left such a great Club to pursue this opportunity, it provided me with a platform to oversee a larger team as the Director of Marketing at the Kangaroos.

  • South Melbourne Football Club
    Chief Executive Officer
South Melbourne Football Club Dec 1993 - Jul 1999

After university, around 1991, a friend, Peter Abraam, seconded me to a sub-committee at this NSL Club to help grow the Club's business. In 1993 and after two years in the role I was voted on the Board and within a few months and at the age of 25, I was asked to become the Club's inaugural GM.As GM which later became the CEO, I became involved with every aspect of the Club. I created a professional office environment & developed, managed, oversaw and worked on • Marketing• Sponsorship & Corporate Sales• Events• Football Operations & Recruitment• List Management• Media & PR • Membership & Merchandise• Venue ManagementWithin a few years we had a vibrant office of 5 full-time staff, a growing Membership, we built a new stadium at Lakeside Oval, achieved an average crowd of 8,500 per game and an impressive list of sponsors and corporate partners. In 1996 following a coaching stint by former Socceroo coach Frank Arok ('94-'96), we appointed Club great Ange Postecoglou as Senior Coach. I worked closely with Ange in building and recruiting a team which was going to achieve sustained success. This all culminated with the back-to-back Championship years of 1997/98 and 1998/99 and a berth at the inaugural FIFA World Club Championships in Rio de Janeiro where South Melbourne played against Manchester United and Vasco de Gama and gained the respect of the world with some admirable performances. SMSC was widely recognised as the leading NSL Club in all aspects at that time and was recently awarded the IFFHS Oceania Football Club of the Century. It was in this role I met Ian Dicker in 1999, then President of Hawthorn FC, who was introduced to me by John Forbes from our sponsor Puma. Ian and CEO Michael Brown were impressed with what they saw at Bob Jane Stadium and recruited me to Hawthorn to help build their commercial area.
  • Elco Food Company Pty Ltd
    Commercial Manager
Elco Food Company Pty Ltd Aug 1997 - Jul 1998
I spent some time working with Elco Food Co. Pty Ltd owned by my good friend Emmanuel Kotis's family. Elco is an importer and distributer of European food products and is best known for Dodoni Feta and Kalamata Olives which today can be found in all supermarket deli cases across Australia.Emmanuel and his late father John Kotis invited me to join the business to work in a commercial role dealing with the every day business activities and the newly created and blossoming relationship with the supermarket chains. Around this time in my role at South Melbourne Soccer Club I was beginning to wonder whether there were opportunities I was missing in the commercial world and Elco provided me with an opportunity to work in the food industry. Whilst I enjoyed my time at Elco, after some time I returned to South Melbourne Soccer Club in the capacity of Chief Executive following my successor's resignation to continue my pursuit of a sports administration career.Whilst a brief stay at Elco, I learned an incredible amount about the business and provided me with a different perspective of business. Elco continues to go strength to strength today and Emmanuel and I remain close friends.
  • Gaffney International Licensing Pty Ltd
    Finance Manager
Gaffney International Licensing Pty Ltd Nov 1991 - Dec 1993
At Gaffney International Licensing I oversaw Finance area and administered Licensing Royalty Revenue from Licensees on behalf of Licensors. I dealt with Hollywood companies like Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios and other well known Film companies. This was my first job after graduating from University in Bachelor of Business (majoring in Accountancy). From here, whilst my accountancy qualification provided a strong financial base, it was commercial roles where I make my mark in subsequent years in particular the sports industry. Gaffney gave me a taste for commercial business and marketing. At University and at Gaffney, I was always more interested in 'making it happen' rather than 'reporting it'. This is where I discovered that I wanted to enter the sports marketing world and pave a career in the sports industry. In 1991/92, my family was horrified with this ambition given sports administration wasn't a recognised career path and was a recently emerging profession at the time. 19 years later, I am pleased that I made that choice, I wouldn't have done it any differently.
