About Peter Kenyon

I'm a strategic thinker bringing insights from my diverse experience in food systems: public health, retail, hospitality and tertiary studies in food policy and political economy. I currently work to support strong, dynamic, healthy and fair food systems through engagement with producers and market operators within Victoria's accredited farmers' market network. Before moving to regional Australia, I owned and ran Sydney's best organic grocer for twelve years, subsequently completing a master's degree in food policy through the leading university in this field: City, University of London.I developed an understanding of the needs of rural and regional communities and was fortunate to work for independent federal MP Cathy McGowan AO as Major Projects and Policy Adviser. This office was defined by high levels of community engagement and customer service with good governance and effective process underpinning this work. When it comes to food I believe a healthy future will depend on developing strong connections to country. We need place-based understanding of landscapes and their potential and to understand that landscapes are something we can eat as much with our eyes and our hearts as with our mouths. In my work I seek to change the way people think and feel about food, to understand the potential of a strong food culture to deliver strong, sustainable, confident rural communities.

Award-winning, certified organic grocery store: innovative, genuine, engaged, transparent, educational and values-driven. We operated to social enterprise principles before they were the thing. This little grocer was named in The Australian's business magazine as one of Australia's elite grocers in 2009, as well as winning the accolade 'Organic Retailer of the Year' in the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide awards. We stocked a wide variety of goods: groceries, dry goods, milk, dairy, frozen goods, breads, health and beauty products, cleaning products and fresh fruits and vegetables.Owned and managed the business with the assistance of a great team, incredible suppliers and generous and engaged customers. Worked concurrently at Qantas for some of this time.Customer service and range were key to our success. Unique products were stocked that aligned with our values and supported principles of local, Australian-grown, organic and ethical. We stocked four varieties of Australian-grown dates from Alice Springs, crisp, heirloom apples from the central west of NSW and heirloom tomatoes and vegetables grown in the Sydney basin. Backyard honey and eggs from nearby suburbs proved the principles of local procurement.Sold the business in June 2014.
