Special Olympics is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of People of Determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport. The Special Olympics World Games 2019 was hosted in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in March 2019 for the first time in the Middle East North Africa since the movement’s founding over 50 years ago. Over 7,000 athletes from 200 nations competed in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports across 10 venues in the Emirates, supported by over 21,000 volunteers.This was the first mega-event ever held in the history of the UAE and the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world that year. It set a new benchmark for the movement in every respect and proved without doubt that the UAE has the capacity and capability to deliver world-class standards in short time frames displaying the highest level of innovation and excellence throughout. Developed and delivered a full marketing and communications strategy to raise awareness about Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, to set the foundation for a legacy of inclusion for those with intellectual disabilities, to raise awareness about the UAE’s humanitarian approach to promoting an inclusive environment that integrates all of society and to promote the ability and capacity of Abu Dhabi and the UAE to hold a leading international event.
