I am an independent design consultant, coach, & social entrepreneur operating under the name “Strategic Organization Design.” In 2004 I interviewed a dozen people who have known me well about the contribution that I make 2 organizations from their experience & point of view. I compiled this statement from their feedback:"Pete is known for his ability to see the big picture, make sense of messes, & lead teams through the resolution of complex issues. He relates well to people from all stations of life, speaks frankly, & has a practical eye for getting things done."I focus on the future oriented, context sensitive, purposeful, intentional, & improvisational design of organizations, ecosystems, & empires, & implementation of change. I have worked closely with union, management, & employee teams at all levels of the organization. Most of my clients have been involved in innovation, growth initiatives, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, alliances, & outsourcing relationships that have become messes. My clients include publicly & privately held for-profit, non-profit, and governmental organizations.The last several years (January 2020 => March 2024) of the COVID-19 Pandemic have created a once in a hundred years setting for designing societies, nations, & organizations. All my conversations in these years have been influenced, & at times dominated, by the pandemic & conflict (including war). BTW: COVID-19 is airborne. Ventilation & filtration of air is essential. This is a complex, ambiguous, fast changing context.As a leader, consultant, & professor I have led cross-disciplinary, trans-organization, temporary teams of knowledge workers (discretionary coalitions) in grappling with the unknown and pressing forward designing innovation to meet the challenges of this pandemic era.The units of analysis & design have ranged from the macro “ecosystem or empire” level of organizing to the micro “deliberations” (conversations) of groups of people wrestling to find a path forward. Given the pandemic we have gone from working mostly face-to-face, to working mostly virtually, to working in a hybrid format. And it is not going back to that “old normal.”And the conflict and polarization amongst and between people has been stunning! Whether at the micro, individual level or at the ecosystem & nations level the consequences of disagreement, conflict, & war are complicated, complex, and dreadful!And did I mention that it has all been done at an extremely fast pace? And that technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been at the heart of it?

These issues usually involve the intersection of technology, people, and organization. In the COVID era my work has often focused on the science, engineering, medical, and human aspects of preventing and mitigating the impact of the pandemic. And these conversations have usually involved strong differences of opinion and contrasting ideological perspectives. I consult, coach, mentor, and teach.My Questions About Change?• How do we design change?• How do we sustain change?• How do we diffuse change?• How do we adapt change?I See at Least 3 Levels of Design, Analysis, & Change:• Macro: Empires & Ecosystems• Meso: Organizations, Networks, & Systems• Micro: Teams & ConversationsDuring 2022 and 2023 I have immersed myself in learning about history as it relates to our present-day context, especially in Eastern Europe. Numerous insights have dawned upon me. This studying, thinking, and pondering have produced a stream of flashes of insight or “coups d-oeil.” (See von Clausewitz, On War.) I have learned about power, conflict, empire, hegemony, imperialism, monopoly, capitalism, ideology, climate change, and the struggle between autocracy and democracy. I have read and listened to Professor Timothy Snyder of Yale University. His books On Tyranny, Our Malady, and Bloodlands have been particularly informative to me. And there are many others I have listened to and read. I am building a new and evolving perspective about the War of Aggression by Russia on Ukraine, the US Middle East Wars, and the US War in Vietnam (in which I was a combatant), and the historical and geopolitical contexts in which they sit. The messages of history and conflict must be considered, incorporated, and heeded by anyone doing organization design at any level.

(Sts Rt) Sep 2017 - Nov 2022STS RT (https://stsroundtable.com/) is a values driven 501c3 not for profit organization (NGO) that is "an open learning community that advances the values, theory and practice that create healthy and powerful human work systems that are demonstrably capable, humane and responsible." I served as the President of the Stewards’ Team (Board of Directors) from Sept 2017 to Feb 2022. • In the summer of 2018, a team of volunteers used the Human Centered Design Process (IDEO) to discover from stakeholders of the Roundtable what pressing issues we should address. That action research project led to numerous initiatives that guided the work of the Stewards Team for several years.• The STS RT website was redesigned in the Spring of 2019. That redesigned website became the platform for action when in the Spring of 2020 the pandemic hit. At the Stewards’ Team Meeting in March of 2020 the decision was made to move from a face-to-face focus to a virtual focus. Between April 2020 and December 2021, the Roundtable provided more than 50 online workshops for the organization design community on a wide variety of topics.I served as the 2022 Conference Design Team Leader from August 2021 to November 2022.• I assembled a small team of 5 to 10 people to design a fully hybrid conference to co-create knowledge. Held in September of 2022 in Austin, TX the conference theme was “Organizing Work Fit for Humans.
