Trauma & Orthopaedics Business Manager
In addition to the UK Health Service transitioning from block funding to a system called 'GP Fundholding', Dartford NHS Trust had a major project of relocating three sites to one new hospital complex. This gave me extensive management experience, especially in personnel issues during operational change and enabled me to see first hand the impact of moving Government funded services to a market oriented basis.Initiated a major restructure and change management plan so that resources (such as Junior doctors, operating theatre sessions and consulting room times) were allocated on the basis of workload, rather than equally per consultant. This enabled marked leaps in efficiency such that Orthopaedics came to operate on 43% more day cases than previous years for almost no extra cost. Implementing this involved significant personal negotiation and persuasion of Anaesthetists and other Medical staff who agreed to a trial period which soon became permanent.Line manager for Trauma and Orthopaedic administration and reception staff. This involved recruitment, day to day management, training and roster planning. As Business Manager of Accident and Emergency I had to develop, obtain approval and report on numerous quality standards and patient care activity in order to maintain funding. Following an unfortunate medical incident in A&E the hospital began an extensive inquiry into the management of the Department. I prepared a schedule showing the number of attenders, weighted by presenting issue, per hour for a six month period. This demonstrated that the incident happened at a time in the week when, on average, the maximum workload was faced by the Department, but it had the lowest medical staff cover. My schedule and notes were incorporated into the final report and resulted in additional funds and a new medical staff rota that more accurately matched expected patient flows.
Clinical Support Services Manager
Responsible for financial leadership, contract negotiations and special projects for Radiology, Theatres, Nuclear Medicine, Anaesthetics, Mortuary and Pathology.
Other Business Experience
One of four auditors assigned to conduct the annual audit of Citra Constructions Ltd. Citra Constructions was one of the largest construction civil engineering firms in Australia in the late 80's and was responsible for many major mining and construction projects. These included the electrification of Queensland's State railways, constructing the elevated structures of the F9 Westgate Freeway, building Tom Ugly's bridge over George's River at Blakehurst and a $10mil redevelopment of Randwick Army Base.Auditing this company involved reviewing contracts, progress payments, contract variations, ghost payroll audits, working with Internal Audit, testing internal controls, site visits and pursuing possible fraudulent work practices. This enabled me to gain familiarity with the administrative processes involved in building, contracting, completing and final acquittals of major projects.Other audit clients* Prouds Jewellers* Computerland North Ryde* C21 Lindfield* Gazal Industries * Innova Europe UK
