JOB DESCRIPTION - I was employed with a key objective : to change Geffens from a production driven factory to a quality driven factory. I achieved this within a short period of time and continued to maintain the highest international manufacturing standards. I reported to the managing director and was responsible for the day to day running of the factory which had a staff complement of 54. This included the hiring and dismissal of employees, formal disciplinary action, BPP compliance and all negotiations with workers' unions. Detailed responsibilities: sorting and valuation of rough diamonds; checking stones after marking to ensure the best size, purity and positioning of imperfections in the rough; overseeing the stones throughout the polishing process to ensure that imperfections in the stones are handled correctly and that target weights are achieved, so as to extract the best value from the rough; ensuring that the proportions and finish of the polished diamonds throughout the production process are to the highest quality standards to achieve GIA triple Ex; optimisation of workflow; monitoring weight loss and production efficiency per process; stock and inventory control; grading of all polished diamonds and selecting the appropriate diamond grading laboratory to send them to, as laboratories work to different standards.

I was responsible for the day to day running of the company, which had a staff compliment of over 50 employees. Two foremen and a marker reported directly to me. The hiring, dismissing, disciplinary action and trade-union negotiations were all my responsibility. Wesselton Diamonds was an ISO9002 company and since the inception of the ISO9002, it was my responsibility to maintain this status and administer all the required meetings, reports, records, etc. I was responsible for the planning and control of workflow to keep the factory to specified targets. All factory purchases of equipment were done by me, ensuring that they were up to date and calibrated. I also valued the rough and graded and maintained the quality standards of polished diamonds for costing purposes and customers’ requirements. I repaired the quality and purity of polished diamonds that had been bought in. I checked the rough (unpolished) diamonds after marking. I was accountable for security in the company and checking that the factory’s stock balanced on a daily basis.

    Lazare Kaplan is a New York based company with production facilities in Puerto Rico, Russia and Botswana, with the operation in Botswana being the biggest of the three. Lazare Kaplan specialises in the manufacturing of Ideal Cut diamonds. JOB DESCRIPTION – before taking up the position in Botswana I spent several weeks working in Puerto Rico and at Lazare Kaplan’s Head Office in New York. I reported to the manager – polished operations – New York. I was contracted to this newly established multi national company with the primary objective of creating a competent and fully functional grading and shipping structure that was both technically and administratively sound. This entailed inter alia training the unskilled staff to be able to grade polished diamonds to international standards. I was able to do this after only one year. Whereas previously all stock had to be re-graded in New York, after the training it was in a condition to be sent directly to customers. I also trained the clerical staff to achieve an appropriate level of administrative competence. Other duties included returning diamonds to the factory for repairs, quality control and weight loss control of stones. I was responsible for the internal security, stock control and identifying problems in other departments that impacted negatively on the finished product. I also undertook the practical development and establishment of a computer system for the grading department. I served on the technical and development committee (5 members) which was responsible for the future development of the factory. Three other minor departments also fell under my supervision, namely Rejects, Shipping and Boiling. Ultimately, I was responsible for the selection and managerial training of a suitable local candidate to take over the supervisory role.
