Elsevier's Nurse Healthcare Education provides a suite of web applications used by thousands of students, instructors, and institutions to advance their learning journey. Our team of engineers built the application platform as a service to deliver those tools. Our platform building blocks use Java as the language, Gradle as the build tool, Spring Boot for microservices architecture, PostgresSQL as the RDBMS, delivered as Docker containers, and hosted by Amazon Web Services managed with OpenShift. We use GitHub, JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins, OpenShift to manage the delivery process. This application platform of 80+ microservices is shared by a dozen Elsevier web applications.

Architect and senior software engineer for v9/v10 Product Development team working in problem domains including REST API, Content Management, Webstore Checkout, Mobile Web Services. Scrum Master and development lead for teams on dozens of releases. I lead the team who created a RESTful interface to Webstore data to be independent of the legacy HTML web site so that external developers could build innovative apps. Created the deployment architecture design and implementation plan. Helped our operations team setup, configure and validate software installations. Designed the error-handling pattern used to validate input and process errors in uniform way. Designed the encrypted card swipe process and guided this through formal InfoSec and client approvals. Developed a responsive HTML5 web application using Twitter Bootstrap and JavaScript to demonstrate the conceptual model of the API. Developed proof-of-concept off-container distributed session management to speed delivery of features commonly found in checkout where data is not persisted until order submit.Wrote public documentation (documentation.ebayenterprise.com) for API. Created multiple presentations to clients, management, and developers. Guided external technology teams development with REST-API. Produced estimates for new work and presented to architecture review board, included detailed proposal for Responsive Web Design which shaped direction of product roadmap.Our team delivered the Predictive Search Service, providing auto-complete for user search. Created the API server using Varnish-Cache with an Apache Kafka event emitter. Apache Solr provided the search results. Designed the Phrase Updater process that receives real-time user feedback to adjust the ranking of Solr search results.Cart and checkout architect on projects for synchronized persistent cart and promotions, PayPal Lightbox Checkout, integration with third-party auto-replenishment service.

Peter has consistently provided technical leadership for several key V9/V10 product development roadmap initiatives and platform enhancements. Under his technical leadership, the Shared Applications team delivered several key enhancements for CMS management, HTML5, and search synonym management that will make it easier to manage our clients’ sites. He also provided technical leadership on key 2013 V9 roadmap initiatives such as the iPad Checkout Optimization, Auto-Replenishment, SEO BloomReach, Abandoned Cart, and the Catalog Service Component Upgrade. Moving forward, Peter will be providing technical leadership for the build-out the V9 Mobile APIs, and other key roadmap and architectural initiatives that will improve the foundation of our existing platform.
