The Refugee Appeals Board is a quasi-judicial body. The members of the Board are independent and may not accept or seek directions from anyone including the appointing or nominating authority or organisation. The Board is considered to be a court within the meaning of article 39 of the EU Council Directive on asylum procedures (2005/85/EC) concerning the right for asylum seekers to have their case examined by court or tribunal.Asylum cases are heard by a board consisting of five members. The chairman must be an appointed judge. One member is apointed by the Ministry of Justice, one member is appointed upon nomination from the Council of the Danish Bar and Law Society (me), and the two other members are appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Refugee Council.

I was employed as legal secretary/assistant for the Director of Centre for Asylum and Family Reunification. My primary tasks were to start up and follow up on initiatives taken throughout the centre (which consists of four divisions that deal with different immigration issues ranging from asylum to family reunification) regarding legislation and administrative procedures and assist the centre director prior to and during meetings at a national and international level. In addition, I represented the Danish government in asylum cases before the Danish Refugee Board.

I was appointed as asylum-expert to an AENEAS-funded capacity building project in Macedonia (Strong Institutions and a Unified Approach in the Western Balkans - managed by the Swedish Migration Board and ICMPD).The project covered 5 countries in the western Balkan region - Albania, Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. The key objective was to provide training the Macedonian beneficiaries in matters regarding European Union legislation and teach them the relevant procedures applied in Denmark within the field of asylum. Furthermore, it was an important objective to make the different government agencies cooperate in order to achieve better results and optimize the institutional framework.

I became very experienced at conducting interviews with asylum-seekers and writing decisions in asylum cases. Also, I gained solid experience working with Danish administrative law and attending meetings before the Danish Refugee Board on behalf of the Danish government. In addition, I participated in several fact-finding missions to the Middle East and Africa.

I worked for UN Special Rapporteur Asma Jahangir as an intern at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan main branch in Lahore, Pakistan. I participated in several fact-finding missions, including one to Kashmir where we assessed the protection needs of women and children after the disastrous earthquake in Pakistan in October 2005. In addition, I wrote a report that examined if anti-terrorism legislation was being used by the Musharraf-government to suppress the political opposition.
