Peter Loxton and Associates Pty Ltd (PLA) provides consulting services delivering high-level strategic analysis and governance advice, as well as independent reviews in management, government, media, arts, ICT/digital, social, economic, Indigenous and regional issues. Peter Loxton is also highly experienced in delivering mentoring and coaching of senior executives in business and government. Following four years on the Board and as Chair of Carriageworks, Peter recently completed six years as Chair of the Board of NSW Health Pathology.

I was invited to take up a permanent part-time position at KPMG in October 08. My main role was working at the most senior levels providing strategic advice to KPMG.

Over more than 10 years I held four different positions as Assistant Director General, covering most areas of responsibility for the Department. I also acted for three to four months as Director General in five different agencies and as Deputy Director General in another large agency. My main role in Premier's Department was having responsibility for Strategic Projects Division, in which I managed staff and hundreds of complex, multi-stakeholder projects and issues across the State. I regularly dealt with the most senior people in Government, business, non-Government and the community on issues ranging from economic and social development to criminal justice and the environment.

When I was in this position from 1992 to 1996, the Head of ABC Radio had full responsibility for all aspects of ABC Radio, including all staff in all locations around Australia and the world. I had responsibility for editorial, budget, resources, property, technical, operations, human resources and finance. My output responsibilities included production, presentation and transmission of all programs and content on all stations and networks in all locations, as well as all ABC Radio News and Current Affairs around the world.

I had responsibility for all staff and programming on all local stations around Australia at a time of huge expansion in numbers and quality of studios, staffing and technology. There was also a revolution in programming with a big expansion of local and state-based, news, information and music programs. In addition there was a quintupling within a decade of the number of transmitters around the nation, offering far greater equity of access for all Australians to ABC networks. I was also responsible for Triple J, which during this time expanded from a single Sydney station into a national network with staff generation content in every capital city.

I was a program maker and manager with ABC Radio National, and before that Radio 2, for many years from 1969 to 1996. I was initially a freelance/independent producer and presenter for Drama and Features, Talks and Rural, and produced radio documentaries on Ian Fairweather and (then) Kath Walker in 1972. From 1973, as an ABC employee, I contributed to state and national Radio National programs in many locations, mainly through the Rural Department, as well as local arts and music programs through 2NA Newcastle. I had local, statewide and national management responsibilities involving Radio National in my roles as Supervisor Radio, Newcastle 1981/82; Manager Radio Victoria 1984/86; Controller Radio National and ABC FM 1986/87; and Head ABC Radio 1992/96.

After moving from a management role at ABC Newcastle, I was appointed as Manager 3LO at a time of exciting change in programming. After about two years, I was appointed as Radio Manager Victoria with responsibility for all ABC Radio output across all networks throughout Victoria. I was recruited from this position to be Controller of Programs (Radio) in Sydney and later had responsibility for all networks, before being appointed in 1992 as Head of ABC Radio around the nation and the world.

After beginning as a Cadet in Agriculture in Toowomba for a year, I moved to Brisbane to become a Cadet Journalist and then Information Officer (Radio). I prepared agricultural science and extension radio programs distributed through ABC and commercial radio. At this time I began doing freelance radio documentaries for ABC Radio.
