Peter Marcus Bach is a Senior Research Scientist at the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) in Rapperswil and Honorary Adjunct Research Fellow at Monash University. His core research focus is on planning multi-functional Blue Green Systems in cities around the world. Integrated modelling is his tool of choice and he is best known for developing the Planning-Support Tool UrbanBEATS (www.urbanbeatsmodel.com), a geo-spatial model for exploring opportunities for Blue Green Infrastructure and policies in urban areas. Peter has delved into the multi-functional nature of Blue Green Systems, planning nature-based solutions for delivering not only urban water management benefits, but also improving the liveability of urban environments through green space access, urban heat mitigation and enhancing local biodiversity by understanding ecological impact of urbanisation. His modelling enables researchers and practitioners to play through wide-ranging 'what-if' scenarios, both in terms of future city development and present day precinct planning.He began his research career as a research assistant in 2008 and embarked on a PhD shortly after completing his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering at Monash University. Other topics of Peter’s past research include applications of Infrared Thermography in investigation of pipe leaks, pavement temperature regimes and urban microclimate. Peter has also conducted an extensive literature review on microorganisms in urban stormwater and current practices in geothermal energy pile foundations.
