In May 2021 together with my colleagues in KPMG's restructuring practice, I transitioned to a new, independent business, Interpath Advisory. I joined the Reading office of KPMG more than 25 years ago now; how time flies! In 2009 I relocated to KPMG’s Manchester office where I began to specialise in the planning and implementation of company voluntary arrangements (“CVAs”) principally for large retailers and leisure operators. The accelerated rise of e-commerce and the challenge of attracting consumers back into stores (and retaining them once the novelty wears off!) is not easy for retailers and leisure operators. It's not surprising therefore to see such businesses scrutinising and rationalising their propety portfolios. I have advised a number of retail and leisure clients in getting a clear view of the true profitability of their property portfolios. In some cases, this includes assisting in negotiating ongoing occupational costs with landlords, in others, the development and delivery of company voluntary arrangements or other formal procedures may be necessary. I believe that negotiations and restructurings in this space are better informed and more effective where the positions of both landlord and tenant are fully understood. For a numbe rof years, I have sat on the Insolvency Committee of the British Property Federation alongside landlords and other professionals.My experience in CVAs is not limited to working with businesses with large property portfolios. I've also successfully deployed CVAs in other scenarios which has led to my direct participation in the revamping the CVA best practice guidance provided to the profession by the relevant Statement of Insolvency Practice.My role took me all over the country until the pandemic confined me to my kitchen. As restructions ease, I hope to be cut back on my usage of Teams and Zoom and ultimately even physically attend a Tranmere Rovers fixture (I'm a glutton for punishment).
