Investing in early stage start-ups and supporting them with soft-funding expertise

Managing the investments of a small family office. Initially just overseeing the activities of private banking agents, but directly managing part of the funds from end 2018.

I founded PM² Photonics which develop fiber lasers for exotic wavelengths and imaging and metrology applications for the mid-IR spectrum.

I built up NKT Photonics' "Knowledge Management" (strategic R&D group) up from consisting of just myself to being a 10 person group while personally ensuring that the group could be completely financed by soft-funding.Overall responsibility for the management of 28 EU and competitive research grants in NKT Photonics' global organization with a total NKT budget of 12.8 m€ and handling 15-20 grant applications a year to maintain the portfolio. The position also involved managing relations with research labs and universities across Europe including overseeing the conclusion of framework and collaboration agreements settling the distribution of economic and IP rights with the closest partnerships.

Managing the development of NKT Photonics new product family of infrared supercontinuum lightsources, which is a ultra-broad spectrum near-infrared fiber based light source covering the spectrum from 1.5 to 5 micron wavelength with a brightness an order of magnitude brighter than a synchrotron. When the work began the technology was a novel technique which had just been demonstrated by a few groups around the world. When the work ended it was a manufacturable and reliable commercial desktop product.

Investigating supercontinuum generation which is a process whereby a number of nonlinear processes can transform high intensity laser light in a photonic crystal fiber into white light. This white light can be used as a high-intensity broad spectrum source in microscopes, biooptics or scientific instruments.

I developed broadband supercontinuum fiber lasers and optimised their efficiency, spectrum and noise properties.

Temporary employment at Koheras A/S working with research and development of the supercontinuum white light sources sold by Koheras.

MSc Thesis: On-chip Detection of Quantum Dot Fluorescence

My graduate studies included modelling and control of systems but focussed on telecommunications and the design and fabrication of planar microsystems. My main project centered on a planar photonic crystal wavelength selective component fabricated using E-beam lithography and clean-room processing.
