Performed and toured with a wide variety of recording acts, including Ron Sexsmith (Blue Boy world tour, 2001-2002), Damhnait Doyle (Hyperdramatic tour, 2000), Honeymoon Suite, Sass Jordan, Laila Biali (House of Many Rooms tour, 2015), Shaye, Andy Kim, Martina Sorbara, Jian Ghomeshi (Moxy Früvous), Rita Chiarelli, Simon Wilcox, Michael Holt (Mommyheads), Mad Violet, Jerome Godboo and many others.Played bass on recordings by Damhnait Doyle (EMI), The Cash Brothers (Rounder), Mia Sheard (Perimeter/EMI), Dayna Manning, Julie Doiron, Jian Ghomeshi, Michael Holt (Fang), Don Kerr, Jory Nash, Stewart Agnew, and many others. In the 90s, was bassist/cowriter for Surrender Dorothy, an alternative rock band signed internationally to MCA/Universal Records and BMG Music Publishing. The band released a CD called "Serum" in 1996 and toured seven times in Europe, playing big festivals and live TV. From 2008-2018, was a member of the progressive rock band Druckfarben, which released two CDs and a live DVD.Currently performing regularly around Toronto with The Dave Murphy Band, and with other various bands and artists.

Wrote and produced the instructional bass book Essential Bass Technique, which was first published in 1995 by Mel Bay Publications. A second edition was published by Hal Leonard Corp in 2001. To this day, the book remains the definitive manual on bass guitar technique, endorsed by Michael Manring, Billy Sheehan, Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith), Alain Caron, Steve Bailey, Rich Appleman (Berklee) and Mark Egan. It received rave reviews including an A+ rating from Bass Player magazine.Wrote many feature stories for Bass Player magazine, including a cover story on Alain Caron (Uzeb) and feature interviews with Don Thompson, Colin Moulding (XTC), Mark King (Level 42) and Joel Quarrington. 1993-1996, wrote the bass column for Canadian Musician magazine; interviewed over 25 world-renowned bassists including Les Claypool (Primus), Doug Pinnick (King's X), Jeff Berlin, Victor Wooten, John Patitucci, Gary Willis and Carol Kaye.

I released a CD EP (Murray vs. the Ants) in 2002, and a full-length CD (Ants and Angels) in 2006. I wrote all the songs, produced the recordings (along with co-producers Matt DeMatteo and Michael Jack) and in addition to singing, played bass, guitar (including two solos), drums on two tracks, chord organ, sitar guitar and glockenspiel. The album charted on a few AAA-format radio stations in the US.I performed many club shows (most with a band) in Toronto between 2002 and 2008, as well as solo tours in Germany (twice), Korea, Japan (opening for Linda and Teddy Thompson) and Ireland (opening for Stewart Agnew). I also played one-offs in Montreal, New York City, San Francisco and Chicago (showcasing at International Pop Overthrow).
