This position involved providing legal advice to staff and commanders on all areas of law relevant to the operations of the New Zealand Defence Force, including military law, criminal law, public international law, contract, human rights law, employment law and international humanitarian law

I served as a legal officer at the Directorate of Legal Services, Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force (HQ NZDF), in the rank of Captain. This position involved providing legal advice to staff and commanders on all areas of law relevant to the operations of the NZDF, including military law, criminal law, public international law, contract, human rights law, employment law and international humanitarian law. Advocacy work included serving as an assistant prosecutor for a Court-martial.

I was the staff officer responsible for coordination and management of the New Zealand Army involvement in the America-Britain-Canada-Australia (ABCA) standardisation programme. I completed my law degree whilst serving in this position.

East Timor

I was the operations officer responsible for planning on the Heasdquarters of the 6th New Zealand Battalion Group (NZBATT) deployed as part of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNMISET), a multi-national battalion including New Zealand, Fijian, Nepalese, Singaporean and Irish troops. An important part of my role was planning the withdrawal of NZBATT to New Zealand and its relief and replacement by a Thai Battalion.

Bougainville

I served as the assistant Operations officer on the Headquarters of the Peace Monitoring Group (PMG) deployed to Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, based in Loloho.

Angola

I served as a United Nations Military Observer with the United Nations Mission in Angola (MONUA), serving in Andulo (a UNITA stronghold) and the Regional Headquarters in Luena.

Canterbury & West Coast, New Zealand

I served as a Rifle Platoon Commander and Mortar Platoon Commander with 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR). I was responsible for the command, training and discipline of 30 soldiers and Non-Commissioned Officers. I conducted exchanges conducted with 1st Royal Ghurka Rifles (1995, Hong Kong) and 45 Commando, Royal Marine Commandos (1996, Arbroath and Brunei). I completed a number of courses, including the Infantry Leuitenant to Captains course and the Grade Three Staff and Tactics course.

I attended Officer Cadet School (OCS) in Waiouru as an Officer Cadet. I was promoted to Company Sergeant Major of the Officer Cadet Company in Senior Class (the senior cadet position). I graduated with the Sword of Honour, the Governor-General’s Medal, the Military History Prize, and the Australian Chief of General Staff’s Prize for Tactics
