* Was hired, based on my cross-platform C++ experience, to rewrite the NetVault Backup core to be fully thread safe, unit tested, documented. Helped roll out Continuous Integration across Linux, Unix, Mac, Windows. Implemented and tested platform abstraction libraries and architectural components including networking (sockets), serialisation, message queues, threading, synchronisation, file IO, logging.* Made it easy for NetVault Backup customers to browse, and restore individual files from disk image backups, by implementing some content awareness plugins. Studied the specifications for VMware VMDK, Windows Logical Disk Manager and zip files, and implemented dissectors for those.* Significantly improved the performance of Dell’s disk-deduplication product, NetVault SmartDisk. Inherited a very complex codebase. Redesigned GC to use Asynchronous I/O (AIO) on both Linux and Windows.* Significantly improved the performance of copies over the network, by implementing deduplication-aware replication.* Lead releases of SmartDisk and the NetVault Backup plugin for VMware using Changed Block Tracking (CBT)

Suntail’s OpenFabric was a very exciting and ambitious project, during the dot com bubble. My components enabled non-technical customers to:* create workflows (state machines) via an intuitive drag and drop interface. Implemented UI and engine.* create web pages that aggregated data from various sources using dnd.* consume and create web services. Automatically created code from third party WSDL/SOAP and vice-versa.

* Joined the Architectural and Business Process Re-engineering (workflow) teams, maintaining the architecture and supporting application developers.* Creating a new screen design tool, and then using it to refine its own UI, was memorable.* Following the merger between Southern Life and Momentum Life, was contracted to develop a successful proof of concept for a new microservices architecture, using C/C++ and Java. This was integrated with the workflow engine. Previously, customer service reps would have to manually look up customer data across multiple application silos. With our POC, the workflow engine could automatically take them to the right screen, pre-populated with relevant customer data, from multiple backends.
