Responsible for the implementation and integration of a specialist suite of products for a key client in the US.

I managed a small project team of developers performing the role of Scrum Master to produce a mobile resource management system. This was to provide a business continuity solution to the primary FiReControl system.

I managed the delivery of a key supplier to the FiReControl Project. The supplier was to enhance their product to meet the requirements for FiReControl and in so doing were providing regular updates of functionality. This involved significant feature enhancement and development of additional capabilities.

In this role, my responsibilities included management of a team responsible for the Design, Integration, Test, and Data Migration functions for FiReControl. The solution was to provide the infrastructure and integrated applications for an enhanced, highly resilient, high performance, mobilisation, and resource management capability for use by the Fire and Rescue Service in England. Reporting to the Project Director I had responsibility for the delivery of the technical solution. I managed a team of over 140 engineers including designers, integrators and testers as well as the technical management of several subcontractors for the enhancement, adaptation, and integration of specialised COTS products.

I managed the delivery of the FiReControl bid for EADS, to replace the existing 49 Fire and Rescue Control Centres with a resilient National capability over nine Regional Control Centres for the Department of Communities and Local Government.

In New Media and Core Portal Services Solutions Delivery, I delivered several Multi Media services and platforms both in the UK and globally. Services delivered include an eMail and Personal Information Management (PIM), Web and WAP Portals, and games platforms. 1) Contract negotiation, 2) 3rd party supplier management3) cross functional area co-ordination 4) financial management and controls 5) reporting into the Senior Exec level and UK Management Board During the last 18 months, I managed the Orange UK migration project to centralise the multimedia service platforms for the member operating countries within the Orange group. This involves the migration of data and services from local platforms to a central platform with the minimum customer impact during the migration. This is part of a large ongoing centralisation programme.

Joining the project in the later stages my role as Design and Development Authority was to review the system under development and establish why there had been substantial cost and time overruns by the supplier. I was responsible for reviewing the system under development and ultimately making recommendations for the controlled closure of the project. The system, a multi-tier client/server based architecture, had a distributed high availability server configuration designed to support a 35,000 users around the United Kingdom. The reason for the closure was that it was proven that the system under development would not scale and there was insufficient time and budget to recover the project without incurring significant penalties.

Led several teams of over 100 developers on a project to improve UK National Casework System handling of immigration applications for the Immigration and Naturalisation Directorate (IND). The system provided a workflow based solution to processing applications for Immigration and Asylum Seekers developed by Siemens Business Services for the Home Office. This system, developed against that backdrop of significant Political and media interest, due to the high volume of applications received at the time.

Successful design and develop a Workflow system to facilitate the award of upwards of £350M in grants for research projects for the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) in Swindon. The successful implementation led on to Atkins being awarded two more contracts for the sister councils within the group. I also managed a number of smaller projects for software development and implementation of bespoke solutions for government agencies successfully using Rapid Application Development (RAD) techniques to deliver business benefit early. This involved the development of bespoke solutions using Visual Basic and an Oracle database. As Senior Consultant, I provided consulting services to government organisations on Prince 2, provided and implemented tools improve the use of Prince 2. I was also responsible for training Graduates in Prince 2 and maintaining standards on projects delivered within the Welsh Office and WDA. This involved project audits and consulting on projects that fall short of the project health check to bring them back within the required standards of delivery.

Successfully delivered a mission critical High Availability system for South Eastern Electricity Board (SEABOARD). The replacement of a large manual Electrical Distribution and Control System for an automated Network Control and Data Acquisition System for the South of London. This development formed the core product used in similar implementations around the world. The solution was based on Object Oriented design using Rational Unified Process and was one of the early adopters of this technology using CORBA messaging technology and proved to be one of the first large scale integrations to successfully use this technology. The solution was developed in C++ using agile techniques and used an Oracle database.

Successfully delivered a safety critical High Availability System for British Nuclear Fuels Limited. A process control and data acquisition system at the New Oxide Fuel Complex at Sellafield used to treat nuclear waste and produce depleted uranium fuel rods. I was also responsible for the development of a system for the Nuclear Waste Treatment Complex for British Nuclear Fuels Limited. This system was developed using techniques using the Oracle CASE method and was developed entirely on Oracle products. This was the first implementation if its kind at Instem and significantly reduced time to market and cost of development. It became the de-facto development approach for the organisation. I was responsible for the creation of a centre of excellence for RAD and Oracle development within the organisation. This proved to be a valuable asset and become the foundation of several subsequent systems developed for the pharmaceutical sector.During this time, I also had the opportunity to carry out some hand on design and development on Oracle, as well as some database administration. This helped create the procedures, standards and guidelines for the development approach. I really enjoyed my time designing, developing and producing forms, reports and writing PL/SQL code.

As a Software Engineer, I was responsible for the design and development of programs to control process plants for electricity distribution and water reticulation. As Project Manager, I was responsible for procurement, resourcing, planning and quality management in the delivery of several small to medium Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) projects.

As a Systems Engineer working in the Telemetry section of the Flight Test Department, I had responsibility for the operation and maintenance of a real time Telemetry Ground Station. The facility was used to capture and process data transmitted by test aircraft during flight-testing.As Senior Systems Engineer, I took the Technical Lead role on a large 2-year project, developing a Flight Testing facility for an aircraft development programme. I was responsible for managing the Customer Acceptance phase of an embedded avionics navigation system.
