The algorithms are based on research into cortical columns. This research has existed for 20+ years and it is hands down the closest thing we have to biologically plausible intelligence. It's not optimization based so it's not very popular and most of the concepts are from one researcher, Gerard Rinkus, so there are only a few papers on it.
