Managed the organization’s 12-person staff, operations and finances. Responsible for and supervised fund development, research, communications and outreach functions. Co-authored, with 17 recognized experts from around the world, the “Ecomodernist Manifesto,” which posits that human well-being is essential to a healthy, thriving environment. Developed and led Breakthrough’s Energy for Development (E4D) Program. Traveled extensively in Southeast Asia, India and East Africa in order to learn more about the three billion people who rely on burning wood and dung to meet their energy needs. Investigated the experiences of people whose countries have recently emerged from that economy. Engaged senior officials at the U.N, the World Bank, the White House, the U.S. Congress, international aid agencies and philanthropy to better understand the international community’s responses to the problem of billions of people living in poverty on a warming planet.

Key member of the leadership team of a $500 million national grant-making foundation, directly managed grants totaling over $60 million. Directed the development of cutting-edge grant making strategies in the areas of environment, ecological innovation and contemplative practice, built a track record of funding leaders and programs through the process that took them from relative obscurity to increasing prominence and influence. Instrumental in creating a number of important institutions including the Breakthrough Institute, Van Jones’ Green for All, the Apollo Alliance, the Blue-Green Alliance and George Lakoff’s Rockridge Institute. Influential in introducing cognitive framing, “green jobs,” and “disruptive ideas” to the philanthropic discourse. Led the Cummings Foundation through the only “clean-sheet” strategic planning process in its 25-year history, a process that included leading scholars, artists, political strategists, theologians and activists and focused on the central importance of creating useful problem definitions.Extensive experience with board and staff relations, designed and implemented a successful process to improve staff dynamics, led and participated in internal staff committees as well as board committees, traveled extensively with board members, organized board site visits and presentations, presented at national conferences and published articles in the philanthropic press and national media.

Led the nation’s oldest and largest LGBT community foundation through a period of extraordinary growth and impact. Increased the annual budget by more than five times, doubled the size of the staff, expanded and improved IT and office infrastructure, led campaigns to focus public attention on the root causes of homophobia and connect LGBT concerns to the larger question of how people deal with human difference. Made speeches, gave presentations, and appeared in local and national media, including radio, TV and print.

Strategic counsel to donor-advised fund clients, managed grants totaling over $12 million, wrote funding dockets, organized site visits, made board presentations and advised individual funders in the areas of environment, HIV/AIDS, needle exchange and democratic movement building.

Served as senior policy advisor to the Senator on energy, environment and agriculture, staffed her on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, conducted research and analysis, wrote speeches and testimony, met with constituents and advocacy groups in the Capital and California, travelled with the Senator, and acted independently as her “eyes and ears” on the ground. Played an important part in the Senator’s decision to take a lead role in opposing the Pentagon’s ban on gay people serving openly in the military, represented her in meetings with HIV/AIDS activists and helped develop her positions on health care reform, a major crime bill and the transition of the Presidio of San Francisco from the Army to the Park Service.

Senior policy advisor to U.S. Senate candidate Diane Feinstein on environmental issues. Conducted research and analysis, wrote speeches and talking points, and served as a stand-in for her opponent in the process of preparing Mayor Feinstein for televised debates.
