My gift is to help groups of people think wider and deeper together than they might otherwise, especially about matters of critical importance. Groups with conflicting viewpoints and strong emotions don't trouble me, rather I see them as a system that is active and ripe for beneficial change. A persistent thread in my current work is helping leaders reflect creatively on their response to existential crises such as climate change.

It is the work of myself and Victor van Aswegen of CineSouth Studios, in association with UCT's African Climate & Development Initiative, The Resilience Shift in London and a group of corporate donors*.We first conducted 39 in-depth filmed interviews with key societal actors – from government, business, academia, NGOs and civil society – all involved in shaping the city's response to an unprecedentedly severe multiyear drought. Next Victor distilled the most valuable insights from the 43 hours of interview material into 55 short, themed films that are easy to access and learn from. Not only is the complex reality of the crisis now documented for ever in unprecedented detail, but the method we used with our interviewees – patient reflection in conversation – means that their testimony is vibrant, personal and highly nuanced. The lessons are now consolidated into a rigorous body of knowledge, applicable to other cities across the world facing similar existential crises.* The initiative is made possible with the generous financial support of Nedbank, Old Mutual, Woolworths, Ove Arup, Aurecon, PwC, GreenCape, Resilience Shift and 100 Resilient Cities.
