I worked in the Research and Development group from the initial optical design stages all the way through supporting instruments in the field. 1. Lead optical designer for the initial single-molecule sequencing propotype (Astro) used as a test platform. Defined, designed and developed a complex laser illumination system and a highly efficient fluorescence light collection system (see Optics Letters, Vol. 33, Issue 9, pp. 1026-1028 for details). Performed system tolerance and analysis and formulated alignment procedure. Butilt and aligned the optical train of the first few prototypes.2. Co-invented the optical technology used in the first Pacific Biosciences commercial release, the RS product (see Science, 02 January 2009/10.1126/science.1162986 for details). Chief architect of the laser illumination system and fluorescence light collection optical system, responsible for detailed design and optical tolerancing, and selecting suppliers. Put together initial prototypes and supported full release to manufacturing and a steep production ramp.3. Designed numerous complex objective lens systems including a medium NA microscope objective and tube lens, a high NA all refractive microscope objective and a high NA catadioptric microscope objective for next generation products. Carried out tolerance analysis and manufacturability assessment.4. Multiple U.S. Patent Applications filed by Pacific Biosciences. -
