About Petja Skomina

For as long as I can remember I've been fascinated with LEGOs and the infinite possibilities they present. During my time as a student of physics I've transferred this fascination to the world around me. What are the fundamental "LEGOs" of the universe, how did the universe as we see it today come to be, what is its future? Very simple questions that demand complex theories and experiments to get the right answers. It's very exciting that I have the ability and opportunity to contribute my part to the process of unravelling these mysteries.I've found my place in Experimental Particle Physics and Instrumentation Physics, where I help research, develop and improve new ways of measuring the smallest of particles and their interactions and in turn help answer some of the biggest questions there are. My main field of focus at present is LGAD R&D for the ATLAS detector upgrade at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.I consider myself to be diligent, neat and organised, good at identifying and solving problems, capable of giving and receiving constructive criticism. I enjoy working independently as much as in a group and I never shy away from a challenge.

My work at JSI at the Department for Experimental Particle Physics is focused on analysis of silicon particle detector prototypes. Using fast pulsed lasers, radioactive sources and precision electronics we test for effects of radiation simulated at the TRIGA research reactor in Ljubljana, we measure the detectors' electrical properties etc.I am currently working with a group that is developing the new High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD), which will be installed in the ATLAS detector at CERN in the following years. My main field of work is silicon detector R&D. More specifically it includes Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) prototype characterization, with an emphasis on radiation effects, and data analysis in ROOT.I am responsible for setting up and troubleshooting the experimental set-ups, performing the measurements, analysing the data and extracting the results. As a student I still work under the supervision of my mentor, but I am always encouraged to be as independent as possible, at which I'm better by the day.

As part of my Erasmus+ experience I took part in an internship course. I was placed under the mentorship of dr. Samuel Silverstein at the department of Instrumentation Physics. He and his group developed a completely new readout board for the new ATLAS Phase-II Tile Calorimeter. During my time with the group I was learning about calorimetry, FPGAs, JavaScript, MySQL databases etc. I was tasked with creating a database framework in MySQL that will be used to log and track the boards' properties and test results.Working abroad with an international group was very exciting, I quickly became an integral part of it and enjoyed tackling a slightly different field of research compared to what I usually focused on.
