With our team, we perform research on risks and potential effects associated with the transport, storage or use of hazardous substances in the Netherlands. Examples are installations/storage of chemicals in the chemical industry, transport of chemicals via pipelines and the storage, transport and use of fireworks/explosives by experts. We research what should be taken into account when calculating the risks involving hazardous activities and advise the Dutch government on this.

Defense date: 6th of April, 2022 PhD in the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis group, under the supervision of prof. dr. ir. K.P. de Jong and prof. dr. P.E. de Jongh. In my research, I focused on the synthesis, characterization and testing of nanostructured materials. During this project, I explored alternative synthesis routes for the preparation of supported silver catalysts. I personally performed not only the preparation, but also the in-depth characterization of the materials. These characterization techniques include electron microscopy (both scanning and transmission), X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, UV/Vis spectroscopy and others. After preparation, the catalytic performance of these materials were investigated for various reactions, both in liquid phase (cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation) and gas phase (CO oxidation and epoxidation of ethylene). In my PhD traject, next to general the lab and research skills (including literature review, setting op the research, project management and scientific writing, presenting and publishing papers), also I had the privilege to supervise students, both during (practical) tutorial classes, and individually during their bachelors or masters projects.

Following up on the various student representation roles in which I participated at Utrecht University, also as a staff member, I wanted to participate in one of the many representation bodies. In the departmental advice committee of Chemistry, we advise the Chemistry board on various subjects, including finances, policy and education. By being a member of the several advisory committees and boards, (see below), I further improved my communication skills, by formulating the needs of the students and colleagues in a constructive and positive way. Additionally, I learned how the university was organized and structured, and why difficult decisions were made certain ways.

Sonning, Uk

During this internship, I worked in the automotive catalyst research group of Johnson Matthey, where I worked on alternative catalyst preparation methods. As this internship was at the Technology Centre located in Sonning Common, I could both experience working in a chemical R&D department, and being an expat.

After my bachelor theses was finished, I continued to work for a few more months on the subject of my thesis, filling hollow mesoporous silica cubes with silver or gold particles, at the research group Physical and Colloid Chemistry.

Following up on the previous student representative rolls, this year, I was part of the Faculty Council, as student representative of Chemistry. The council has the right of consent and the right of advice on topics important for the faculty of Science.

As student member, I represented all chemistry students in their needs for better education. Every two weeks, I had a meeting with the head of the chemistry department, the head of education and the two heads of the different chemistry institutes in our department.

As commissioner educational affairs and vice president, my role in the board of the study association was focused on education. During this year, I participated in many representation councils within the chemistry department and I organized various events to talk to students about their study related problems, and made sure that their problems were heard by the responsible members in the chemistry department. Furthermore, as board member of the study association, I was guiding several committees and organized a large number of events.
