Chief Technology Officer
CurrentAt TrueNode, I assist with turning complex tech problems into simple solutions. I use my proficiency in IT to drive a successful outcome for our customers, making sure that our team delivers working software, within budget and scope. For technical projects, I design effective systems, automate routine tasks to improve productivity, monitor the quality of our software engineering process and ensure that the supporting infrastructure can scale to accommodate future needs.
Chief Technology Officer
As the CTO of SampleMe, I have multiple responsibilities: managing and motivating the local development team, ensuring the product vision from a technical perspective, designing the system architecture, setting up the infrastructure automation, assisting the team in meeting our goals, recruitment and handling external-facing technology discussions.Since there's multiple facets to this position, I'll only focus on sharing some of the technical highlights that I work with daily, which include: microservices, scalable Docker containers, ReactPHP for long-running processes, PHP 7.1, Angular 2 (+ Webpack) for frontend development and Ionic 2 for mobile development. In terms of architecture, our solution revolves around microservices developed in Symfony 3.2 which communicate via API (OAuth2 with JWT) and worker queues (Amazon SQS acting as backend). The infrastructure is cloud based and features a high-performance, globally-replicable setup, with Docker powering our solution. DynamoDB and MySQL 5.7 are used as data backends, and Varnish is used in the invalidation model in order to support long-running caches that are only updated when the data is changed. Another highlight is the usage of ReactPHP, which allows us to bootstrap our microservices efficiently and keep our service and kernel alive between multiple requests, thus dramatically improving performance. We also use Travis to run our unit, integration and functional tests, as well as quality checks on the codebase: PSR-2 compatibility, code coverage, cyclomatic complexity, etc.In terms of extras, we feature a powerful build and deployment pipeline that revolves around Travis CI and Docker Hub, and we also have a set of reusable modules which we host on our own Toran Proxy registry. Finally, since we work in a very dynamic market, we've built several RAD tools which allow us to quickly experiment with new endpoints and also an in-house API gateway solution for co-ordonating all of the microservices.
Agile Development Coach
As an Agile Development Coach, my role is split between working with people and technology. My primary role is to motivate the team, keep everyone happy and help them achieve their potential, which I do through a combination of communication, availability and frequent follow-up. I focus on understanding the driving force of a person and then use their strengths in order to compliment their environment, build a strong foundation for the future and wake the sleeping giant within them.Apart from my coaching role, I also double as a technical lead and handle the architecture and technical vision for the projects that we are running.Technically, we work primarily on enterprise-level applications using Symfony 2, and focus on TDD (via PHPUnit unit, integration and functional tests) and BDD (using Behat through Mink, Selenium2 Driver). We try to go for micro-services approaches whenever it's possible, and we regularly also use Angular JS, Node JS and Gulp for our front-end Javascript (complimented by Karma w/ Jasmine automated tests), and SASS for our front-end CSS.We also use the following tools:- Continuous Integration: Travis CI and Jenkins- Continuous Deployment: Jenkins- Static code analysis: Scrutinizer CIIn terms of infrastructure, we are working primarily using Docker containers for our build artifacts, and also handle our own dev-ops through Puppet and Chef.We also do cross-technology pairing and information sharing with our colleagues from Java, C#, Android and iOS, in order to learn and grow from each other. We are also using SCRUM as our Agile framework (we also have some Lean development being done in-house) – the system allows for kick-off/retrospective meetings, code review meetings, and dedicated team improvement meetings (i.e Herculean Doughnut). The current internal system also ensures that the procedures are monitored by a Scrum coach that assists the team in accurately identifying issues, and helps with optimising various workflows.
