About Petrouchka Moise, Mba, Ddes

Dr. Petrouchka Moïse is an Assistant Professor and Cultural & Community-based Digital Curator at Grinnell College Burling Library. As an artist/scholar, she teaches classes on visual and material culture and curatorial studies, focusing on the Caribbean. In her role as Cultural and Community-Based Digital Curator, Dr. Moïse is responsible for developing interdisciplinary initiatives to enhance the learning experience of the academic and cultural community. Dr. Moïse joined Grinnell College as a 2020-24 CLIR/Mellon post-doctoral fellow to design the Haitian Art: A Digital Crossroads (HADC) Project. HADC is a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources (HCRR) grant project by Grinnell College Libraries and the Waterloo Center for the Arts (WCA), co-lead with Assistant Professor of Art History Fredo Rivera. HADC focuses on creating a digital asset management system and a public-facing platform for the Waterloo Center for the Art’s Haitian art collection and other collaborating partners to assist in digitizing and cataloging their collections. The project also concerns itself with the state of Haitian art history, considering how the digital humanities can be used to think about indigenous and ethnic art collections and resources globally.

Own and operate a studio that showcases "My Petrouchka" artwork and conducts painting classes for individuals and groups wanting to learn painting on silk and other types of textiles for display, wearable art or home decor. My style is a natural expression of a color and texture. It would be described as a cross between a fine craftsman and mature artist. I describe my art as “subtly intense”. The pieces have depth but their statements are not overpowering. I believe that the outlines in nature allows us to translate the energy of a moment, When I work with wood, the grains tell me how to flow, and I just bring out what is already there. With silk, it is a composition of layers and tones that releases a sound of color. Through my art I believe that I am becoming more of a storyteller than an artist.I have been creating and designing works of art for the past 15 years. I am planning on researching the textile arts of the Haitian culture to create a new fusion between the dynamics of wood and fabric.vivrestudios.com
