Growing up with a father who had spent over a decade in the film industry — or as my sisters and I liked to say, “our dad works in movies” — I was taught from a young age the power of storytelling. Seeing in tandem small nuances and overall themes, pursuing a positive mindset in the face of adversity, creatively approaching how to stand out in a crowded content space: all of these skills and more were learned through family movie outings and lively dinner conversations. It was this love of storytelling that drew me to Texas A&M University, a school rich with tradition, relationships and some of the best “stories” of any school in the world. My time at Texas A&M (my “Aggie story” if you will) was a period of development, change and excitement. My bachelor of arts in communication allowed me the freedom and flexibility to design my own path and explore a multitude of disciplines, ultimately culminating in a fulfilling academic experience that has prepared me to work in a variety of career fields. From writing longform poetry to discussing how to have a healthy relationship with death, my minors in English and sociology provided a well-rounded perspective on people and how to best tell their stories to the world. Additional courses in strategic communication taught me the power of a well-crafted message in both corporate and non-profit settings. The “other education” I received at Texas A&M was as invaluable as the time I spent in the classroom. Working as a student employee, studying abroad in Italy, serving as a Fish Camp Co-Chair, playing in a drum circle–you name it, I enjoyed it and learned from it. As an officer in several of these organizations, I was called upon to uphold the Aggie core values in not only myself, but also others, teaching me the importance of impactful leadership and open communication. I would not be the woman I am today without these organizations and the peers I worked alongside. As a College Access Counselor for the Texas A&M University chapter of AdviseTX, I have the opportunity to empower students to find their voice amidst the noise of the college admissions process. By finding the story in every student, we open the door to a future filled with prosperity, peace and possibility.
